How This Works(Read First)

Post by Hedgebound Heart on Tue Feb 20, 2018 3:55 pm

Welcome to The Hedgebound Heart! All players posting on this forum must be at least eighteen years old and will be expected to generally behave in a mature and respectful manner towards each other. We use the Rules As Written(RAW) for the Chronicles of Darkness(CoD) Storyteller(ST) System as well as Changeling: The Lost(CTL) 2nd Edition Kickstarter Preview. These rules are subject to change as official rule books are published or as needed to fit the play style of our forum. All players are expected to have a firm grasp of the basic rules used for both game systems. Here are some recommended online resources:

All posts by our members will fall in one of two categories. There is no in-between. A post is either Out-Of-Character(OOC) or In-Character(IC). OOC posts are how we talk about the game and communicate with each other as members on this forum. IC posts are how we play the game, and should only contain descriptive narration of our own characters' thoughts, words, and actions.  If you need to share OOC information in an IC post(such as game mechanics or dice rolls), it should be hidden with a spoiler code, so as not to distract from the storytelling aspect of the game. We will also use the following conventions for IC posts:

Narration will be in plain text with default font, size, and color values. This is what you should use when describing something about your character.

He walks into the room and looks around.

Thoughts are italicized and may use different fonts or colors. Characters should not respond to one another's thoughts. That's called metagaming.

This room is gross.

Speaking is indicated by quotation marks and may also use different fonts and colors.  Anything your character says can be heard by everyone in the scene.

"This room is great."

Whispering should be coded as a spoiler with the name(s) of the recipient(s). But, keep in mind that many fae creatures have preternatural hearing.

whispered to so-and-so:
"I really think it's gross."

If you plan on using a non-default font or color, you should pick one for your character and be consistent. Occasional style changes for emphasis is totally cool, but please remember to focus on the content of your post rather than just its appearance..

As a good rule of thumb, a lot of difficulties can be avoided if we all try to post with three things in common:

Common Sense: Read the rules before you play. This includes the rules of the game, the rules of the site, and the rules of the venue you wish to join. Nothing is more frustrating than answering the same questions over and over again because lazy players simply don't read the rules. The FAQ is there for a reason. Please read it first if you have any questions. Common Sense is also a good way to avoid metagaming. Just because you know how to do something doesn't mean that your character would. Look at the dots on your character sheet if you're not sure. One dot of Intelligence is not going to make anyone a criminal mastermind, just like someone  with a single dot in Athletics won't be competing in the Olympics anytime soon. Keep it real. Also please keep in mind that there is actually a method to any apparent madness behind the site rules. They are the product of experience and meant to keep thing running smoothly and eliminate any potential problems before they occur. We're always open to suggestions, but maybe play for a few months first, just to see how things work.

Common Courtesy: Please respect the posting rate for each venue. If real life circumstances interfere, an Away From Keyboard(AFK) notice is always appreciated. Also, please keep in mind that In-Character posts are between make believe people.  These characters can be complete assholes to each other in IC posts without any real life consequences. After all, it's just pretend. However, Out-Of-Character posts are between players. Players are real people, with real feelings, so please don't be assholes to each other OOC. If any OOC post seriously violates this, the poster will be reminded to stop being an asshole. This specifically means no bullying, harassing, or other extremely annoying passive aggressive bullshit. Offensive posts will be deleted and the guilty parties will receive an official warning. Any repeat offense will get you banned from the site... unless we're in a bad mood, or we just don't like you for some reason. Then, we might simply ban your ass after your first offense. Who knows? Let's not find out. This site wasn't set up to babysit anyone. We're all adults here, so please act like it.

Common Purpose: We're all here for the same reason... to tell awesome stories. Every player contributes to the story being told, and good storytelling allows each participant a moment to shine. You might fulfill the role of the hero, the villain, the victim, or simply an innocent bystander. Every story is different, so there's no need to chew scenery or hog the spotlight. Every player should be allowed a turn at bat, because sometimes it's the scrawny kid who knocks it out of the park. We should also agree to respect the realism, or plausibility of every story. Ridiculously silly posts that derail or disrupt a scene will either be edited or deleted(and a warning issued as described above). When in doubt, you can always ask your ST before posting. It's all about teamwork. We're in this together and being kind and courteous goes a long way. We all have bad days, so don't be afraid to apologize and take responsibility for any moments of poor judgement or rash decision. At the end of the day, keep in mind that nothing is written in stone and this site is supposed to be fun for everyone.

When situations do arise that require an arbitrator, the ST of the venue has the final say regarding disputes between their players, and the Hedgebound Heart Admin will only step in if and when there is a direct conflict with an ST. However, all parties are expected to try and work things out amicably before involving an ST or Admin. Please keep in mind that this is only a game, and we're all here to relax and enjoy ourselves.
